The Daily Priapism

Local artist Joe Black graced the lab this weekend after I returned to the city from my holiday break. It started as a conversation about making music and led into watching magic happen in front of me.

Joe Black, formerly know as Searchlight, has been making music for a while and is looking for a new sound. With his dynamic delivery and energy driven punches, I am sure the track below is only the beginning of a great relationship with DreadHead Studios.

When Joe Black entered the studio he had a beer and a baseball cap, apparently in the cap was a few hundred songs that he has been writing to his own music for a few years. We sat back and talked about drum machines, (he's working with a SP 505 and wanted to work with a sampler) we made a little 3 min beat on the mpc and we got to some instrumentals, he stopped me on a track that was a year old to the day today. The track like all of my older tracks, hasn't yet been retracked to protools as it was made on my windows machine in Reason 3.0. Once Joe and I get some time we will finish cleaning this up and get it together.

What I loved about this experience is that Joe wrote down 3 words on a piece of paper and the rest was right out of his head. We talked about trying to find a track that matched what he started with (120 BPM) but ended up with about 90-100. Joe recorded with a decent distance from the mic, so my compression that I added made a wacky change to the sound, when we meet up again, we will work on that, and my ability to handle the pure talent of someone of this caliber in the booth. After about 40 minutes of talking music and about 20 minutes of recording Joe dropped as much as he could remember from his library in his head.

So in its rough form, here it is; Joe Black in an yet to be titled track from Dreadhead, recorded and produced entriely within DreadHead Studios.
