Famous and Infamous Quotes

Category: Fergie Digital

We start with the Good

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

This famous quote, which is actually a poem, is usually tagged as part of a speech from Nelson Mandela. The actual author of the quotation is Marianne Williamson, a spiritual activist. To be precise, it is from her 1992 book, "Return to Love" (hardcover p. 165, paperback pp. 190-191) . The quote, regardless its origins, forces me to take a deeper look into my fear of potential. When I am preparing for a gig, I often worry about what could possibly go wrong and all of the things I have prepared, is it possible that the real reason for the butterflies and nausea is because of the fear I have for not knowing my limits?

Take the quote, use it however you can. You can raise the courage of those who are uncertain, or increase the communal awareness of those who are selfish with their talents.

The next quote is the Bad

During the 2007 Miss Teen USA competition, Miss South Carolina gave a very interesting answer to the following question.

"Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?"

Miss South Carolina answers.

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and uh, I believe that our educationlike such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and... I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children..."

I don't know what to say.

What doesn't make sense? Don't you want our education to help the Iraq to build up our future?
